Mayor of San Pedro Huamelula, Victor Aguilar took a crocodile to be his wife a fortnight ago. The ceremony took place in the southern region of Oaxaca.
This unconventional marriage is actually a tradition to bring good fortune to the local fishermen.
The snappy bride was baptised, dressed in white and had her jaws clamped shut.
Tradition demands that the Mayor marries a new crocodile each year.
Mayor of San Pedro Huamelula revealed: ‘With this ritual we ask for a good harvest, for the sea and the lagoons to give us all the food we need and we ask that everything goes well with everyone here.’
“The marenos (referring to the local residents), call her ‘The Princess’. So the role that I play is to be the husband of the princess,” he told the Sun.
After the ceremony all the attendants dance and enjoy a wedding feast.
“The dance they do here is like an offer to God, to thank for the land, the harvest, the fish.“, said one guest who attended the ceremony.
It seems politicians are not safe from doing weird things to please the public. The unique marriage is part of a ritual which has been practiced by the Chontal Indians since 1789.
